Montessori Children's House of Loudoun offers many enriching activities in the course of the school day. These include music, yoga, Spanish, and Mandarin.
Children ages 3-9 attend weekly Spanish class. Spanish is learned through games, puzzles, songs, stories, and puppets. The curriculum includes numbers (1 to 20), colors, farm animals, songs, parts of the body, clothing, food, shapes, seasons, and favorite places.
In the Kindergarten and Lower Elementary Programs, the children attend Spanish class twice a week. By this time, the children’s vocabulary has advanced enough that grammar and phonetics are introduced to them. The children create their own books, learn to play board games in Spanish, and make projects to take home.
MCHL offers a Mandarin class once a week to students three and older who wish to participate. The children are introduced to the languages in an informal, conversational way that is natural for language development.
The Elementary, Kindergarten and Early Childhood children all enjoy yoga once a week. Yoga is beneficial to children for their body and minds. It helps in their physical health by developing strength, flexibility, coordination, improving their balance and controlling their bodies. It also improves their focus and concentration.
The music teacher at MCHL works with all age groups and incorporates a variety of instruments along with rhythm games and song into the weekly class. Parents of children ages three and above are invited to join the class twice a year for the winter and spring performances.
The kindergartners and Lower Elementary children have movement one afternoon a week. Movement benefits children by helping to build strong muscles and bones and provides opportunities for interaction and cooperation with peers through group activities and games.
The weekly computer class ensures that all kindergarten and lower elementary students are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills for using a Chromebook. The curriculum gives the children opportunities to gain experience and confidence as they learn to navigate with a mouse. By using word processing programs, the children can enhance their budding creative writing skills by composing a simple sentence and creating an image to complement it.
